The Imaginism In-House Workshop - Week 1

Tonight I'm glad I have a little bit of free time to reply to emails and post on my blog about the Imaginism Workshop, which is btw a beautiful place full of wonder where unicorns run free and rainbows lead our path to happiness.

I arrived to Toronto on January 5th and stayed at a hostel for a few days. It was nice to be back in Canada and feel some real winter weather. The workshop started until the 8th so I had a bit of time to look around and visit some places in the city. The first thing I did of course was to ask for directions to the nearest Tim Hortons because I friggen love that place and I'm glad there are plenty of those all around the country.

Heaven on Earth ►

On Sunday Thierry picked me up at the hostel and took me to the Imaginism House, he showed me around and then we headed to the airport to pick up another pupil (whose art can be seen here). Later on that night we went back to the airport to get another one. The 4th student arrived until last Thursday.

The house itself is amazing. There are paintings by Bobby, Kei and Thierry on every wall. That afternoon we got some supplies for the week and apparently tomorrow we're gonna clean the house, YAY!

The workshop oficially started on Monday, I was really excited about it, it was what I was waiting for since I got accepted. That day we had a lecture with Bobby Chiu. He shared some of his experiences in the industry and told us the secret of how to become a succesful artist. A lot of things he said though I had heard them from my own dad but I never paid attention to him because that's my job as his daughter, but now I know that all succesful men will always tell you the same thing.

The day after, we started the actual drawing lessons with Thierry Lafontaine. From that very day I started to see things differently, I realized that: a simple square is harder to get right than you think, people are just boxes in facial features-wrapping paper, drawing has the same structure as writting/talking, and many other things that have blown my mind. It's my first time using a Cintiq too, they're super practical and fun to draw on! I might try to get one later on this year, I just have to save some money because those things are E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E but they're totally worth every penny. Also homework was already pretty hardcore, I mean, it's not tough or anything but it takes a long time to do... although it's mostly me who is kind of a perfectionist and keeps redoing stuff all the time.

It's so great to see how in such a short amount of time I'm beginning to improve, or at least to feel a lot more comfortable drawing people, I'm so stoked about subway sketching tomorrow! I'm expecting to find lots of interesting characters to draw.

I have no words to describe how awesome this year was, probably the most intense one I've ever had. It wasn't only about good things happening to me (really bad things happened to me too) but also about experiences and important changes in my life.

It made me realize that dreams come true if you do something about it, the rest will follow through.

I'm saying good-bye to 2011 with a smile on my face, so much to be thankful for and I hope everything keeps getting better.

Wish you all the best and may 2012 bring more and exciting adventures to your lives!

Saxophone Players

This was an assignment for class. We've been getting animation lessons at Anima Estudios from Frank Gladstone to improve the team's animation quality (it's a common practice in the industry). We had four lines to choose from and also we were given the choice to create our own character or use an existing AE character so I chose Quico from "El Chavo" (he's the one I animate most in the series so I'm quite familiar with him).
It's Marilyn Monroe as Sugar Kane in "Some like it hot", which is a GREAT movie btw.

I had a motorcycle accident on Halloween and I had to stay home for three weeks. It's nothing to worry about, but that explains the bandages.

I was inspired by the fact that everyday I got a little more anxious, I really wished I could walk without feeling insane amounts of pain.

Right now the wound is a lot smaller but it still stings a bit if I move my leg too much. Maybe in a couple of weeks it'll be completely healed.

I'm not to thrilled about the bigass scar :(

The one on the right was made before the one above. I still had two healthy legs, haha.

It was a few days before Halloween. A friend from work was telling me that she wanted to dress up as Anna Bolena with the slit throat make-up and all so when I got home I wanted to see if that could be done with sharpie and it turned out pretty decent. My little brother freaked out when he saw me but he's used to all the crazy things I do for fun.

Sharpie Wounds

This past weekend was a long long weekend thanks to the Mexican Independece Day which was on Friday. We got Thursday off as well so I had a lot of free time for myself.

Top Cat came out on Friday and in the morning right after I showered I decided to make a sharpie tattoo of TC himself as a way to celebrate the premiere. It was going to be quite a challenge since I had to draw it upside down so that everyone else sees it up right (all of my thigh tattoos look upside down when I'm standing because I make them from my own perspective). I was getting really frustrated with it so I quit and decided to try something different instead.

When I was a teenager I remember watching the making of Dawn of the Dead and when they showed the make-up FX my mind was totally blown. Like this...

That could've been an important turning point in my life if I had known that there were schools for that. I realized such thing when I was already studying animation so it was a little too late. I love being an animator but I think I'll always have that thing for make up effects...

This last couple of weeks I was feeling bad for not doing sharpie stuff anymore but I had been thinking a lot about doing some make up FX tests using the markers, face paint and lip gloss. Most of the things I do with sharpie are mere mental experiments long before they become real. So in my mind it all made sense when I started painting wounds on my skin. I was so pleased with the first one that I got extremely excited.

I had painted bruises on myself before with face paint and I knew it was gonna help me a lot to make the wounds look a lot more real. Also when I made my spiderleg tattoo I learned I could make stuff look 3D using only the markers and a bit of white eyeliner. Lip gloss was the new material in the list and it was time to see if it worked as I had in mind.

Of course making small wounds wasn't quite a challenge. I wanted to try something really mindblowing. I have a pretty solid understanding of how different kind of wounds look like. When I was a little girl I used to be fascinated by my mom's medicine books which were a little too graphic, especially those about forensics. I still like that kind of stuff. For a long time I wanted to be a doctor or better yet a criminologist so I grew insensitive to graphic and gruesome pictures and painting them on me turned out to be very exciting. It sounds kinda fucked up but it's just who I am, haha.

So yea... even though I know what wounds look like I still used reference (all artists do). After going through some images in Google I decided to make a big ass wound on my leg. I'm pretty damn happy with the result. That afternoon my dad was supposed to pick me up for that week's driving lesson. I was waiting for him outside and when he saw my wounds he freaked out but then he realized it was just me being insane again so he eyerolled as always. It's fun how he supports my crazyness, he even took me to WalMart despite the fact that I had two gruesome injuries on my legs. People were staring at me... most of them were completely grossed out by it. One girl approached me to make sure those were fake because it looked truly revolting, once I told her it was make up she felt relieved and started telling me how it would be awesome for a Halloween costume and then left.

On Saturday I was still on fire. I really needed to keep practicing what I had just learned. My brother was home and I made a small wound on his arm. It was quite a surprise to see that my wounds were very popular on dA and lots of deviants kept asking for a tutorial. As I was painting my brother I was explaining the process because if he understood how it's made maybe I could make the tutorial that very day. I wasn't sure if I was ready to make a tutorial though so I thought that maybe a livestream was a better option. I prepared my webcam, my mirror and got livestream all set. For some weird reason it didn't want to show my webcam so that was a big problem... At the end I made a time lapse that would keep my sharpie fans busy for a bit.

I went the whole day with that thing on my face. Once again my dad took me out but this time we went to the theatre to watch Planet of the Apes.

The day after I still had the urge to paint wounds but I got busy doing the laundry and also I was waiting for my mom to pick me up. I was getting a little desperate just sitting around and waiting so I quickly grabbed my sharpies and started painting a wrist cut which turned out pretty decent. My mom supports my crazyness too so she doesn't really care if I'm being totally ridiculous in public. We even went to grab lunch and ice cream.

Today I'm pretty chilled. Painting so many injuries on myself over the weekend was fun as hell. I'm preparing something a lot bigger and grosser. Stay tuned!

I had to take a break from animating and the 30-day drawing challenge to make a tribute image for FREDDIE MERCURY whose birthday is today, w00t!!

I was gonna do the Freddie for a day thing but I forgot I only hang out with lame people... so no FFAD for me this year again. Boo.

This guy is pretty much the man. I can't think of anything wrong with him, except that he's not among us anymore :C

Check out this tribute video that Queen made for him, I'm sure it'll make you cry and if it doesn't you have no heart and good taste in music in which case I hope you get run over by a herd of gnus.

Made in Photoshop and composed in Flash. Took about 5 hours of awesomeness.

30-day Drawing challenge

Yesterday my friend Amhed posted on my fb wall this challenge and asked me if I wanted to do it too. At first I was a little hesitant cuz I don't have that much free time but I thought it could be a pretty good warm-up since I haven't drawn or painted in a long time and I kinda need a boost. It's a lot more fun when you have someone to draw with, it gives you motivation to keep going.

I wanted to make speedpaintings but good lord am I rusty!! So I decided to make quick drawings like this one, they're easy, quick and charming- I only get to draw very late at night anyways.

I won't be posting here every day though, instead I'll make a collage with all the drawings at the end of the challenge. It'll be a lot more interesting.

Space pin-ups are awesome

Last night I refused to go to bed as always just for the hell of it. It was already 3am when my friend Alex posted this on my fb and I was like "OMG, space pin-ups?? yes, please" so we made a deal that she'd draw me as a space pin-up if I drew her first.Of course I opened Photoshop in that very moment and started drawing out some girly poses. I wasn't expecting to finish it right then because I wanted to make it all clean and pretty so in every step of the process I was like "yea... it's just a rough drawing, I'll clean it up when I have some free time". It went on for about 45 minutes until it was all shaded and had a BG.

Even at that point I thought it was just a rough drawing and that I would make a clean version anyway. I uploaded it to my fb to see what my friends thought. Alex was still awake and she really liked it, I told her it was a very quick drawing and that I'd make it cleaner next time but she said it was already very pretty.

I went to bed to get at least 4 hours of sleep and then I went to work. When I logged onto my fb I realized that people actually liked the fact that it was rough and that the strokes looked quick and confident.

Sometimes I forget that I don't need to make a clean drawing to make people like it. It's so hard to guess what they'll like and what they won't. I'm sure all artists are aware of this.

And as promised, she drew me as a space pin-up as well and it's totally awesome!

Prints?

I've joined some site called RedBubble where I've put my work on sale.

God knows if this thing actually works, but at some point people started asking me if I sold prints and I tried doing it myself but it was a sad series of epic fail so I decided to try this kind of sites...
This is my profile on RedBubble in case you're curious about it.

Also, there's FineArtAmerica from whom I received an invitation to join a couple of weeks ago. I created my portfolio there as well but it's just weird how it works. As opposed to RedBubble, it doesn't specifically tell you in which sizes your artwork is available to the public so you might think you can get a 16"x20" print when in fact all you can get is a greeting card because the image was too small. Here's my portfolio on FAA.

So I don't really know if one day I'll be able to sell my artwork but it's not something I worry about, it's just fun to think that someone might wanna buy it.

Night

A couple of days ago I felt like drawing a cute little girl who turned out to be a representation of the night (due to the moon-shaped hair). The original idea had also a day girl but artblock ran faster than I paint so she didn't make it to this drawing :(
Someday I'll draw day girl too 'cause it would be definitely a lot more interesting to have both day and night together.

Release me...

...Before you break my heart.

Ever since I heard Release Me by The Like I had the urge to draw something.

This wasn't the main idea but I got really lazy and didn't finish it. It was supposed to be a girl holding a guy by the face and telling him all the things that the song says.
At the end I was like "hmmm... so if there's no dude... what is she holding then?" I thought of a million things she could be doing but I went for one of the oldest tricks in the book - butterflies in a crystal ball, haha (I know, I'm super lame)

I guess the drawing still conveys some emotions I wanted to portray.

Took about... 6 hours?

Bucky, the angsty canuck

Last night Bucky and I were complaining about how lame and boring his fb profile pictures are so I took action and decided to change that once and for all.

It was very tough to draw him because we saw each other only twice when I was still living in Vancouver so I'm not quite familiarized with his face but I gathered as much reference as I could (which wasn't all that much) and apparently it turned out pretty decent, or at least he hasn't complained.

You can't go wrong with a hockey jersey when it comes to Canadians... just saying. Haha.

Took about 5 hours, finished it at 5am.

Sexy pirate

I made this one in like, uh, 3 days? maybe... I was supposed to push realism as far as I could but I still suck at it so it looks more like game art, haha.

I like the way it came out. It was hard to choose a pose, actually I took a lot of reference photos to see which one fit the character better... I ended up using none.

The boots were quite a challenge because I'd never done it before but it was fun and educational.

I made this last night but I took the pictures this morning because I wanted better lighting.

I did it based on an inside joke between my bff Liliana and me because I'm totally mad for a guy and I'm doing probably what a mad girl would do to find out things about him. LOL

I literally watched (or just heard) 300 three times while making it. So yea, you can imagine how long they took. I'm not sure about the Persian messenger but I'm quite happy with the way Leonidas turned out

Jellyfish Tank

Yesterday at work I had the urge to animate a jellyfish swim cycle when I saw Clint's photos from the aquarium. I got a little carried away and also added bubbles on the back and some psychedelic colours.

I've always found jellyfish really mystical and intriguing. They're so weird and gorgeous at the same time, probably one of the most amazing sea creatures I've seen. When I go to the aquarium, I spend a lot of time staring at the jellyfish tank.

It took about 3 hours to make a single cycle and one hour to do the composite.
Just this morning I animated the bubbles.

House MD tat

More sharpie stuff, yay!

This time my friend Liliana was brave enough to be my canvas. We took a long time to decide what to draw and Dr. House seemed like an awesome choice.

I used about 8 different colours: black, gray, brown, mustard, yellow, two shades of blue and silver. It took as long as Shaun of the Dead is... I had to keep her distracted, haha. Also the "In loving memory" thingy on top is an inside joke.

The camera lens screwed up, it looked a million times better in real life :C

Made two nights ago.

The tutorials will be focused on ANIMATION, not the program itself so it's not necessary to have Flash installed on your computer, use whatever program suits you or just grab a pencil and take notes.

Spiderleg

Okay, it's official: I'm creating a whole new album for my Sharpie stuff because this is just way too fun and I'll be doing it in a regular basis.

I made this last night. I've always liked this tattoo design and decided to do it with Sharpie. It was a great challenge.

For those who are curious about the process, it's quite simple.
I used seven different colours (black, slate gray, brown, burgundy, eggplant, pink and silver). Light colours go first because we don't want black to ruin the tips of the light markers. Then I just work my way up to the darker tones.
I smear and blend them with my fingers or cotton pads. I also use nailpolish remover for highlights and soften some areas so the colours look smooth.

Someday I'll go livestream so you all can see how it's done :) All I need is a webcam... if only my webcams were Windows 7 friendly.

Kim Pine

Last night before I left work I felt like drawing Kim.

She's one of my fave characters from Scott Pilgrim, probably because she reminds me of my younger self so much it's ridiculous... Everyone is like "OMG you look just like Ramona!!" but if I was a SP character I'd definitely be Kim.

They don't develop her character in the movie as much as the comic does and it's understandable because otherwise it would've been a 3 hour long movie and we definitely didn't want Scott Pilgrim to turn into Harry Potter.

The zipper looks very crappy, I know...

Took about 3 hours.

Scott Pilgrim tat

I made this out of boredom two nights ago. The next day I refused to shower because I didn't want to wash it off, haha. Lucky me, we had the day off.

I wore a mini-skirt to show it off but it was upside down so I guess no one could make up the shape... Still I wore it quite proudly.

If I keep doing this in a regular basis, I'll end up creating a gallery only for my sharpie stuff.

Joan of Arc

This is a remake of a drawing I made almost a year ago.
I actually never liked the old one and it kind of bothered me that people faved it on deviantart.

Yesterday I felt like redoing it because lately I've been feeling more comfortable drawing girl faces and painting skin.
I'm getting much better at drawing facial features in general. I don't know, they seem a lot more solid than before.

Girls are my favorite subject to draw. I have so much fun making them all pretty and feminine. This year I will draw a lot more females!!!!! So stay tuned :p

Sharpie ink

Lately I've been enjoying the wonders of Sharpie. A couple of months ago I got a box of 22 sharpies and started drawing stuff on my skin. I had seen a girl from deviantArt do it quite pro so I gave it a try. It's a really fun art form but it's sad when I wash it off :C

The first thing I drew on me was a rat bird from the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs artbook. The astronaut one was done two nights ago while listening to Amanda Palmer. I usually draw on my legs because it's way easier but sometimes I also paint my torso or my arms.

Don't worry though, Sharpie is non-toxic and it's easy to wash off if you shower.

I was listening to The Cure at 3am and the moment I heard that phrase I felt the urge to draw something.

It's from the song Just like Heaven. I had made another drawing based on it last year that you can fin under Digital Art.

That song is so beautiful I could literally illustrate every single phrase.

Took 4.5 hours. I finished at 730am just in time to get ready to go to work :p

Beyond the Sea

OMG I can't believe I actually finished this drawing!

Ever since I listened to Beyond the Sea by Bobby Darin in the Bioshock soundtrack I loved it so much I NEEDED to draw something based on it.

I sketched this idea like four months ago but I hadn't figured out what to do with it yet. At first it was going to be like a poster for a concert in Rapture, it was actually gonna be all vectorized but then it evolved until it became this.

I got a lot inspiration from the BS2 artbook that comes in the Special Edition. Liliana gave it to me for Christmas because she rocks. So yea... I finished it tonight.

Took about.... 4 months, haha.

I started it one morning a couple of weeks ago when I was restless and didn't want to work. Today I FINALLY finished all the animation that had to be done so I finished painting this as a way of saying "FUCK YES!! FREEDOM!!!"

I'm a little sad the project is over but it's ok.

Van Gogh

This one goes to a fellow deviant who got 1st place in the Create a Clone contest at my Clone High club on deviantArt.

A House for Pilgrim

I saw Scott Pilgrim now that I went to Canada for a short vacation. It was so damn awesome!! Too bad it comes out in Mexico until November 5th... so I'll have to wait a little long to see it again. It was as epic as the slogan itself so you all MUST see it!

Alexia Ashford

So this took longer than I thought....

I realized that the Game Bosses contest on dA ends on Sept 2nd so I decided to give it a shot and drew it really quickly

I don't participate in contests that often for obvious reasons... I have too much work to get done.

This is Alexia Ashford from Resident Evil CODE: Veronica, my fave game from the RE series.

She's by far my favorite boss of the gaming world. The way the develop the character is super interesting, it makes you wanna meet her in the game. Hear her sing 8D

Yay!

I had wanted to make some Evelyn Evelyn fanart ever since I listened to them the very first time last year.

This is the actual size of the pic. I figured that since I don't have much time to draw, it'd be better to start making small and quick drawings instead of heavy hi-res illustrations.
Yea, that's what I'm gonna do....

If you don't know them, it's a duo formed by Amanda Palmer and Jason Webley that tells the story of two conjoined twins played by themselves. I would've loved to go to one of their shows but they never come to Mexico :(

Operating Room

I sketched this drawing months ago and I just coloured it. At first it was gonna be super detailed, the nurse looks awesome at 300 dpi's but since I don't have much time to paint anymore, the rest was lazily done hence the result.

SCIENCE!!!

The other day they were screening Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs at work and it made me remember how awesome that movie is so I felt like drawing myself in the CWACOM style.

I guess this would be a more accurate representation of myself: cute and super geeky. Think of me as Flint Lockwood with boobs.

Pretty in pink

I made this at work during my spare time. The director for the project we're working on is always busy so as I waited for him to check my work I was painting this.

It took 3 days to complete.

Her lips were the most difficult part. I didn't wanna make it look completely dull and uninteresting.

At the end I got kind of lazy with the BG so I just got an image from Google and added a filter in Photoshop.

El Chavo Disney

One day I was watching the episode of Family Guy where they travel to different cartoon worlds and one of those happened to be the Disney universe so they appear all stylized and animated in full-animation just like any Disney animation.

So this is how this started. I was like "hey, it'd be damn awesome if we made an episode of El Chavo like a Disney movie!!" I TRIED to make the characters using the Disney style but I failed epically as you can see. I still like them though. I bet if I suggested this to my fellow animators, they'd kill me.

Bottom of the Sea

Today I was gonna start working on some commissions but I didn't feel inspired so I drew something that makes me happy because that's where I find inspiration.

I've always thought that Astrid is one lucky hoe.

Chick

I've had too much work to do lately so today Friday I wanted to do something else for at least an hour...just a little distraction. That's where this drawing came from. It was inspired by my favorite artist at dA She's incredibly awesome. Her art makes me wanna keep going. There was a time where I felt stuck and that I would never ever improve as an artist but then I discovered her and everything changed. Now I have dreams again, I wanna be a pro in a few years, I wanna be an art director, a concept artist, an illustrator, a character designer, I dunno... DREAMS!!

I tried to pull off her style without reference. I think it's not bad... it's just....different.

Ruffnut

I looove Ruffnut, I could spend all day long drawing her. She's awesome.

Today is Friday so I didn't feel like working. I felt sleepy for the most part of the day and whenever I opened Flash to get some work done I felt demotivated. So, as you can see, I drew her instead.

Took about 2.5 hours. Poor Liliana... I didn't go out with her to get lunch cuz I was just too focused.

I, Robot

I just wanted to practice some speed painting and I chose my face, w00t

It was gonna be simple and very much like the photo but I thought that was lame so I added some robot parts.

It took about 3 hours: One hour for the face, two hours trying to figure out what I wanted to make of it =/. I'm not quite happy with the result but I don't care... someday I'll draw something cooler.

The Ruff and the Tuff

FINALLY!! They're here!!!

These are my fave characters from HTTYD. The first time I saw the movie I liked Ruffnut a lot, then the second time I realized that it's impossible not to like Tuffnut when you like Ruffnut.

I love them cuz I find it really cool when siblings fight a lot and are mean to eachother. It's gay (and really creepy) when they're obsessed with eachother.

This drawing was originally made for the HTTYD meme that I still need to finish. Someday...

So I'm still pretty obsessed with HTTYD. I made this drawing because my dA ID needed to be changed.

I decided to make it look very much like the 3D models from the movie.

The outfit is my own design. I'm not very happy with the belt but oh wells....

I started it at work cuz I had the urge to draw something about the movie. Also, she has ram horns because I'm an Aries :p

Rasputin

Jeeze... I finally finished it. My eyes hurt so much. When I'm super focused I don't blink at all so my eyes get uber red.

"Rasputin" by Boney M rocks so hard cuz it's sooooo catchy!! I remember listening to it as a kid. Gotta love disco music.

I just rediscovered this song. I had never paid attention to it but it's actually pretty sweet. It tells the story of Rasputin, Russia's greatest love machine. I've read a lot about him, he's an intriguing character. Did you know it's said that his penis was 30cm long?? Crazy...

It took me like 3 hours...3 hours of "Ra-Ra-Rasputin, lover of the Russian queen".

I added a texture for the sake of it. Also, painting beard is tough...really tough....

Characters

I made these ones for a friend. They're the main characters from "Wicked" the musical cuz she wants to animate them.

These are all the same character. It's based on an existant character, that's why the designs are very similar to eachother. They asked me to make him look a little bit older. The original one is a 8 year-old kid and this one is supposed to be 13 or something.

He's uber poor and supposed to live around the 1800's but they told me so after I had already designed the first two on the very top.

I'm not even gonna talk about that project cuz if it turns out to be written by some dumbass I hate, I swear to God I WON'T work on it. I'd rather be dead.

La Llorona.....fo realz

This time this IS la Llorona. For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, Wikipedia to the rescue.

A couple of weeks ago I was asked by one of the directors at my studio to come up with a design for this character that is to appear in an upcoming animated movie (hopefully). I wasn't sure what he wanted but I played around with some bride designs and the typical evil being in a monk's robe. His version of La Llorona is a woman who got left at the altar and now she wanders around weeping so he told me to dress her in white. Since it's a mere legend, she could be anything.

You should've seen the original design for this character (made by a dumbass), it made my eyes bleed. When the director was telling me what he was looking for, I started giving me an idea of what she'd look like. Based on his version, La Llorona was a beautiful woman who left everything for the man she loved only to get left at the altar. She got completely insane afterwards so she wept around town ever since. After a couple of decades of utter grief and gravity, her appearance changed and she became an ugly lady but still you can tell she used to be pretty years ago.

I surely had fun designing these. It was 4am and I was on fire.

Happy New Year 1959

W00t!! It's done!!

I haven't played that game in a couple of days but painting this was just as awesome.

I was gonna draw only the Little Sister and the puppet but I like the Big Sister a lot too and even though the design is a lot more complex I drew her anyway. It was a challenge after all.

When I had started painting the character I still didn't have the background figured out so I did some google research and I found a screenshot of the game that has the "HNY 1959" sign and it matched the composition perfectly.

It took forever, like.....15 hours?

La Llorona.....NOT

This is not "La Llorona" (a Mexican legend) but today I was asked to come up with some character design for an animated movie where La Llorona appears. I got kinda overwhelmed after a few hours so I started looking for references of the Little Sister from Bioshock2 cuz I want to draw her tonight when I get home. I ran into some of the concept art for this game and suddenly I felt inspired.

I have no idea what this girl is supposed to be, I just thought that miniguns are fucking badass.

Harley Quinn

Damn.... it took longer than I thought. I had been planning this drawing for a couple of days when I found a picture of me smiling like this (so those who know me might find that smile quite familiar).

I had been wanting to make a drawing of Harley Quinn for so long but I guess I didn't wanna use her default pose or sittuation. It was actually tough to come up with a good pose for this face so I goofed around a bit and it ended up being her in a hoody.

I didn't know how to justify the fact that she was wearing a hoody though but then it came to mind that MAYBE it was too cold for her to wear her harlequin suit. Then I thought that a cup of hot chocolate would make it look like it was really cold and I dunno why the mug ended up being the Joker's head, ha.

Took about....eerrr...4 hours.

Pure Morning

Inspired by the song "Pure Morning" by Placebo [link] . I've always felt inspired by it so I have plenty of sketches that I've drawn while listening to it. The first one been made when I was 17.

Took me about 3 hours. I had challenged myself to do it in an hour but apparently I failed epically.

I copied it from a photo of me (of course this it not me) that I took the other night but instead of being holding a joint I had my cellphone which I used to take the picture in front of my small octagonal mirror.

Attack of the Giant Killer Pipboy

Classic scene from the Ghostbusters with a slight twist.

I've always loved this scene, I remember watching it as a kid and thinking that the Marshmallowman is gigantically adorable.

I don't know why I came up with this idea but I think it's awesome!!! I need to play more Fallout 3.

SAI painting

I had noticed that many super awesome artists on dA use a program called SAI and I wanted to give it a shot.

It's simple and light, it takes like 1 minute to download and it's all ready to use. It's very similar to an oekaki board so if you're familiar with Oekaki, you'll find this program easy to understand.

This is my first attempt at SAI. I think it's not that bad. Usually the first picture I make in a program I don't know ends up looking like shit but this time I guess it turned out ok.

Astronaut

I was really hesitant whether to post this drawing or not, since it's got a sad story behind. But I guess it's time to get over our issues and move on.

It's a drawing my ex asked for as a birthday present this year. I based it on the song "Astronaut: A short story of nearly nothing" by Amanda Palmer, my fave song from her solo album. I never gave it to him cuz we broke up before i colored it. I was having a tough time trying to figure out what kind of coloring i wanted to use so it remained incomplete for a long time. Still I finished it because I really like this drawing even though it reminds me of many things I'd like to forget.

It's-a-me

This is Liliana as Luigi and me as Mario. I know I'd make a better Luigi since I'm the tallest but my fave color is red and hers is green.

The other day we saw the hats of these two characters in the market but unfortunately we didn't have money to get them and once we had money they were GONE... LONG GONE!!
So instead I made a cute drawing of us. We may not have those hats, but we have eachother and that's what really matters :) She's always there for me :hug:
When it comes to BFF's, Liliana is boss, she totally kicks ass.

I know I had said that my Xmas drawing would be my last drawing signed as '09 but I actually drew this one last week when we couldn't find those hats anymore.

Merry Christmas

Well I wasn't sure if I wanted to do a Xmas card this year cuz I'm not precisely a christmas person but it's always fun to draw stuff related to it and I hadn't made one since 2006.

When I was sketching it I was like "uh....do I really wanna color ALL that texture?????" and then I said "YES, I DO!!" So I did.

Belleville REN-dez-vous

Just 2 animations I did between last night and today for fun.
When I was on the bus heading home I listened "Belleville Rendez-Vous" (Les Triplettes du Belleville) on loop for like 30 mins because the images that I had in my mind were hilarious, so I ruffed some thumbnails and that's how i came up with this little dance that kinda matches the song tempo.

Every Christmas....

One of the things I hate about Christmas the most is the fact that I always get uber lame presents. Clearly my family doesn't know me well because every year I get at least one purse that will never be used by me. I HATE PURSES! And they're not even funky looking, they're just plain.

For this drawing I wanted to practice some charac design. The person in the middle is me, that's how i've been drawing myself whenever i use this kind of style. I sketched the ruff idea when i was on the bus and that night I did the ruff drawing, the clean up and just tonite I colored it.

Nar

I sketched this drawing right after I drew this one because I wanted to "kick my smooth ass" once more so I asked Liliana to pick one of my uber old drawings and I'd redraw it. She chose a picture of this character that I created back in 2004 for a comic based on a couple of friends and me. I hadn't colored it properly, only roughly cuz I didn't feel like finishing it at that moment.

Today when I was going to work I thought to myself that I should probably finish it because the drawing itself had so much potential and it deserved to be my next masterpiece. So I painted it at work.

I you don't know what I mean by "kicking my ass", well, I'll quote my other drawing description "[It was a contest] which was about redoing one of your old drawings, not improving it, doing another drawing that looked like it was clearly based on the old one".

Here's the old one.

For the remake I tried to keep most of the elements there, except for the stars because they made no sense. When I had finished sketching it I realized I had missed the dice so a tattoo solved the problem. If you pay close attention to her butt you'll see the dice!!

I'm really happy with the result. I've been practicing so much lately I feel proud of myself. In a few years I'll be able to take over the world!!... or not....

Ezio

Yesterday I went to get my copy of Assassin's Creed 2 cuz my uncle had told me about a place that sells it for cheaper than anywhere else. Then of course I went home to play the crap out of it.
I played for only 5 hours and I LOVED IT. When I went to bed I was thinking to myself that Ezio deserves to be drawn sexily too so today instead of getting important well-paid work done, I drew Ezio!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It took me about 8 hours. The details of the outfit are not quite similar to the actual character cuz I copied it from the case.

2004 vs 2009

This morning I found out that there had been a contest in dA called "Kick your ass" which was about redoing one of your old drawings, not improving it, doing another drawing that looked like it was clearly based on the old one. The contest was over already, but I thought that was a pretty cool idea so I did mine anyway.

The old one was my very first entry to the TNT mascot contest in Mexico City. Back then I thought it was the greatest drawing ever but now I realize how crappy it is, hahaha.
The new one is a quick remake, since I did it for fun i didn't even bother cleaning up the ruff.

Coolest artist you'll ever see

Last night I ran into an awesome dA of a Disney guy. He's got pretty much the most amazing style you'll ever see (I know, I know... I overuse that phrase but this time I'm being serial, dammit!!). So after browsing his dA page I found his blog.

I checked it out and I found the most gorgeous drawings I've seen lately. Every single one of his illustrations has so much personality!!

I love his drawings because they all look sooooo solid and so 3D, some of them even look like actual 3D models from Maya. Also, he's got very strong character and environment design, crazy life drawing and caricatures, even his street sketches and doodles are masterpieces!!

Ug, I can't find enough words to describe how I feel about his art.

Cool artists and such

This entry won't be about my "art" (yes, I use quotation marks cuz I just found real artist that make real art), instead I'll use this space to share some stuff I found on deviantArt.

The thing with dA is that most people there upload whatever piece of crap they drew at school so the site developed a bad reputation. However this doesn't mean you can't find good art, I can name at least 10 awesome artists that have blown my mind and you'll see.

Let's start off with He's from Hong Kong. I loved his art because his digital illustrations look like they were painted with oil on a canvas. His style is very impressionist, large undefined strokes that all together make a masterpiece. Also the concepts are very interesting, kind of darkish and erotic, apparently they're for a book or something like that. The lighting, the colors, the angles, the facial expressions, the feeling and the composition are simply perfect. BTW his got a gf who has a great gallery too. Super artistic couples always make me happy.

The second deviant artist I can think off the top of my head is She's from the Netherlands. I found her a couple of months back and I fell in love with her art when I saw this drawing. She made me find inspiration again, before that I didn't feel motivated to improve my drawing and painting skills at all. What I liked about her art is that it's simply beautiful. No dramatic angles, no overwhelming designs, no super realistic textures, nothing but subtle beauty. The way she mixes colors is gorgeous and they blend pretty well with the texture, I hadn't seen something like that before. Her drawing style is very cool too, she draws super cute faces and bodies. I wanna be like her when I grow up (true fact).

Then we have This Chinese-American 19 year-old girl has the extraordinary ability of expressing true feelings through art. Her drawings are unbelievably expressive, they have so much soul and content. Whenever you see her illustrations it's like you're looking right through her heart. This is my fave pic of her, I could stare at it all day long, it just conveys so many feelings and thoughts.... She's very young and crazy talented, it'll be interesting to see her art in a few years.

The next one is Another Dutch girl. You just need to see her gallery to see why I think she's an awesome artist. Her pencil portraits are photorealistic. She captures every single subtlety of the person. She's got a funny technique, she knows eyes are the most important part of the face, if you get the eyes wrong your drawing is wrong. So what she does is to start from the eyes out, I don't know how she does it, but her tutorials look like the drawing just emerges from the blank sheet of paper.

Her friend from the UK, does exactly the same but with Prismacolor pencils. The first time I saw one of her drawings I thought they were photos!! She can paint extremely realistic in photoshop too, it's ridiculous. There you can see some of her old stuff and it was hideous, I can't believe she improved this much, she musta sold her soul to the devil.

The next artist is He's from Mexico. He's got pretty cool concepts and compositions. He's the kind of guy that draws eccentric outfits but in a good way. Some of his drawings are dark and insane, some of them are just insane. Both styles are pretty awesome cuz they have this nice touch of fantasy all over them. His coloring style is not quite clean and even though some of his pictures look incomplete, they're still pretty sweet. Oh, and he has tons of neat linearts in his gallery that look suuuper hardcore.

Next in the list is He's from Chile. There's only one word to describe his illustrations: epic. Whatever he draws looks epic. He's the kind of artist that once they've found their comfort zone drawing wise, they stay there and everyone loves it. All his illustrations have pretty much the same formula but it's such a gooood formula.

Then comes He's from sweet sweet Sweden. I just haven't seen something like this before. He's got one of the coolest styles ever. It's all dark and twisted, I love the colors and the texture on top of them. The concepts are kinda surreal and fantastic. Most of his illustrations are objects or people that look extremely lonely and abandoned, so they're a bit depressing. Still they're great to look at.

The ninth chosen one is from the US. No one can resist her kitties comic. I just love the world of Lackadaisy. I can't say it's quite original but she pulled it off soooo well. The whole concept is fully developed, the art has its own style, from logos to characters. Not to mention the fact that she colors like a goddess. everything looks super 3D and the textures are very realistic. She found the point where cartoony and realism blend perfectly. She's got a large range of style so that's cool.

Oh man, I hate it when I have to mention the last one of the list... It makes it so tough cuz there are too many great artists out there and I have to choose only one. Well, I guess I'll go for the youngest in my list She's a 16 year-old Russian (damn those crazy talented Russians). I'm quite impressed that someone so young can draw stuff like this. I just can't imagine how good she'll get when she's my age. I feel like an amateur in comparisson, haha. Even at this age I can't do pretty things like her, which is really sad.

Anyway, that's all. I think I spent like 2 hours writing this entry but it was tough to pick only 10 people and describe how I feel about their art!!!

I should get back to work now.

Robin Scherbatsky

I'm so excited about the fifth season of HIMYM that I just haven't stopped thinking about it and have been watching episodes of the previous seasons.

Last night Liliana asked me to draw Ted but I told her I'd do it once I find inspiration. Today inspiration came but I drew Robin instead, haha. She's super cool and the funniest things always happen to her. I love her!!

I copied it from a photo, it's not quite similar, especially for the eyes but eyes are tough to draw because they say a lot about the person. I'd call it a speed painting but it honestly took me about an hour.... so I'm not quite as fast =/

Vectorized Leela

A vector drawing of Leela, that's right people, it was entirely made in Flash.

I had never tried to color a drawing in vectors like this, but it was actually pretty fun although it gets boring after a while. It took me FOREVAAAA, I started it like 2 or 3 weeks ago, but I hadn't finished it cuz i was sick of looking at it, it's tough!!

At first it was gonna be just plain vectors with plain shadows and highlights but I love challenges so I decided to go for the semi-photoshop look.

Used hundreds upon hundreds of gradients and the soften fill edges tool that you can find under Modify/Shape/Softer Fill Edges....

First Date

One day when I was going to work for some reason I ended up thinking of the least common beverage you can drink with a straw. So I thought of beer, and the only good excuse to drink beer with a straw is because you're Irish thus you're too hardcore for milkshakes.

So I came up with this idea of an irish date. Haha.

This one took me about 15 hours to complete. At first it was gonna be simple: black outline, solid colors. But then I thought that was a waste of a good concept so I got rid of the super nice and smooth outline and started thinking of a nice way to color it. I redid it like three times.... but finally, here it is... now I just have one drawing left to be completed!!

The scroll was taken from google, I'm not THAT good....yet!!

Chavo Cute pt.1

In Anima Estudios we make the animated series of El Chavo del 8, the remake of a live action TV show from the 70's.

Yesterday I was browsing deviantArt and I stumbled upon a ridiculously cute drawing of some manga character. It was so cute I felt like puking so I asked Liliana why drawings like that are so damn popular and she said that it's because cute is what people like. So I made a cute version of a few characters of El Chavo just cuz that's what it needs to be popular.

I sketched 8 out of like 12 characters, but Liliana only painted 4 of them in Flash. Someday I'll upload the rest.

Lonesome Organist Rapes Page Turner

I feel like I spent my entire life on this illustration!!

I started it weeks ago at work but I hadn't had time to color it. My first attempt was the day I did the ruff drawing but for some reason it wasn't quite working. I realized I can't color without inspiration so I've been using different masterpieces as wallpaper so whenever I turn on my machine I see those beautiful sources of inspiration, haha.

That happened two or three days ago when I started coloring this at work (I know, I know, I'm a bad person). I just couldn't let the mousepen go, it was attached to my hand!!

It's supposed to be a graphic representation of the song "Lonesome Organist Rapes Page Turner" by The Dresden Dolls. I kinda wanted to make an animation instead but it would've taken me years literally, so I went for the illustration thingy. I was having trouble coming up with a design for the characters. She had to look all inocent and submissive whereas he had to look creepy and pervy. I guess they ended up looking great, I'm pretty happy with the way they turned out.

Oh man....so many things to tell about this drawing...

Anyway, I should actually be in bed cuz I'm meeting up with Liliana tomorrow morning and it's 5am already. Time flies when you're having fun.

Baby Ren

Today after work I wanted to color a drawing that I had made yesterday, but I don't know why it wasn't looking quite as I had in mind ....so I aborted the mission and maybe someday I'll feel like trying again.

Instead (since I found coloring realistically very fun and educational) I drew myself as a baby. I hadn't realized how much I've been drawing myselt lately. Next time I'll try drawing some friends.

It took me about an hour and a half. I like the way it turned out cuz it looks like an oil painting sort of thing.

Myself

So I wanted to try a different kind of coloring. I'm trying very hard to improve my technique that it's getting rusty already.

This is supposed to be me, it's sliiiiightly different though, but hey.... I can't be THAT accurate.

I liked the way it turned out, it looks smoooooth.

BTW I'm not green-eyed.... but brown eyes looked too lame in this drawing

Dali Cat

Liliana once was nosing in my notebook where I have tons of doodles and she found a drawing of a weird looking cat licking a hamster that she liked very much so she asked me politely to make it an illustration cuz it had potencial.

I thought it'd be pretty cool to make it look like a Dali, so I did.

It was super fun to paint!!

These are two rat characters I created a while ago, but recently I traced them in Flash because I wanted to animate them to the song "Evil night together" by Jill Tracy. The style fits the song pretty well, but I just can't think of a good sequence that matches a chunk of the song....

Someday inspiration will come and I shall follow!!

So I FINALLY finished it.
I had been planning this drawing for months but then I got a job and things got pretty tight.

I wanted to make a colorful picture of them...although there's something about it that I'm not very happy with....oh well, I just can't get enough of this couple, they look so cute together. They deserve more drawings!!!
